Teeth Cleaning

Cleaning:

Our team will gently and effectively remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and around the gums. Hygienists will utilize a variety of tools including a scaler, high-grade toothbrush, and powerful toothpaste to restore your smile.

Flossing:

Your hygienist will floss your teeth near the end of the cleaning process. Not only will this help them remove plaque that couldn’t be removed with surface level cleaning, they also spot areas where your gums are sensitive/bleeding that may need extra attention.

Fluoride treatment:

Based on the state of your teeth and time since your last teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment may be recommended. This will only take a few minutes, and this natural mineral will help your teeth fight off cavity-causing bacteria and support healthy tooth enamel. 

• • If you have crowns, bridges braces, or removable dentures, your risk of cavities is higher, and fluoride is even more important. 
  • Fluoride comes in the form of a gel, form, or varnish the hygienist will apply to your teeth.

Education/presentation:

Good dental health doesn’t stop with regular office visits. Our hygienist will walk you through proper brushing and flossing techniques to practice at home between appointments. Best practices include brushing twice a day and flossing at least once. They can also make a recommendation for a toothbrush/toothpaste that addresses your specific oral health needs.

The length of your appointment time will vary on how much tartar and plaque has built up, and on the type of cleaning required.

Deep Teeth Cleaning

Also called periodontal scaling and root planning, a dentist may recommend a deep cleaning. This might be done for a variety of reasons - for example if there a significant build-up amount of plaque/tarter that has exceed your gum line and created space called “pockets” or any bone loss is seen on x-rays.

• This non-surgical periodontal treatment will help you avoid tooth loss. While your specific treatment plan may vary based on your specific oral health and the progression of your gum disease, typically your deep cleaning will include the following steps:
• Before the treatment begins, the area effected will be carefully numbed with local anesthesia as to avoid as much discomfort as possible. Your dentist will consistently check in to ensure you are not feeling pain throughout the procedure.
• An expert Brentwood periodontist will use specialized scaling tools to remove tarter, plaque, and calculus attached to the teeth so the pockets created by the build-up can heal and gum recession stops. Often this will include irrigating the gums as well.
• Next, the doctor will do root planing - smoothing out the root area both promotes healing and helps fight off the bacteria. 
• This type of dental cleaning may take more than one appointment to complete, including a follow-up to evaluate the state of your gums and any pockets that were developing.
• While you may experience some sore or tenderness for a few days after your procedure, you should be able to immediately return to normal activities unless instructed differently by your doctor.
